Development Program Offered for Veterans Working on Their “Career 2.0”

Development Program Offered for Veterans Working on Their Career 2.0It’s estimated that during the next few years, more than 1 million members of the U.S. military will transition into civilian careers.

For many, that transition is difficult. Not because the veterans lack the skills and drive to be successful contributors in their new roles, but because they – and their new employers – have a difficult time translating their military accomplishments into non-military positions.

That’s why leadership and talent consulting experts at Korn Ferry Hay Group are teaming up with partners Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) and Harris Corporation to offer the Leveraging Military Leadership Program (LMLP).

The pro bono program is designed to guide successful transitions from military to civilian careers and is open to veterans of any rank who separated from military service in the last two years or who will transition in the next 12 months. To date, more than 350 service members from all branches of the military have participated in this pro bono program. In 2015, the program was honored with Chief Learning Officer Magazine’s Silver Award for Community Service.

As part of the program, a team of global leadership experts will take veterans through a three-month program composed of online, remote, and in-person assessments; coaching; instruction; group exercises; and lectures. The in-person portion of the program for the eighth and ninth cohorts will take place Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18 in Herndon, Virginia, and September 30 – October 2, 2016 in McLean, Virginia, respectively. Veterans will receive the same research-based leadership development services Hay Group offers to boards, CEOs, and senior executives at leading global organizations.

The Leveraging Military Leadership Program teaches veterans how to strengthen their personal, interpersonal, and executive communication skills, clearly articulate their unique value, and chart their professional journey based on a strong career strategy. We have had the privilege of working with some of the finest military professionals as they explore their Career 2.0.

The program has also garnered tremendous support from past participants.

This helped me land the exact job in federal financial management I wanted,” said Christopher Cizek, retired Navy Commander with 22 years of service. “The perspectives I gained continue to help me succeed in my new career.”

“An extremely insightful, innovative, and pragmatic course, the Leveraging Military Leadership Program was both professionally challenging and personally enriching,” said Kelly McKeague, retired Air Force Major General with 34 years of service. “It stretched my perspectives, armed me with invaluable tools, and enabled me to hone my transition focus. Two tangible outcomes were my ability to better tap into non-traditional networks and to articulate a more resonating personal story.”

On July 4, 1776, fifty-six individuals boldly signed what became one of the most revered statements of human rights the world has ever known, The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America. In that moment, the American republic was born.

Freedom is not without cost. Indeed, to support their assertion of freedom from the British Crown, the American Founders solemnly pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. For them, the Declaration was a death warrant. And each and every day since declaring independence, Americans have sacrificed both blood and treasure to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves, their children, and their fellow citizens within the global community. To date, 2,757,196 Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice in our ongoing struggle for freedom.

Nuclear Power is Clean, Safe, and Reliable… But Can It Be Competitive?
For over 30 years, U.S. nuclear plants provided clean, safe and reliable electricity. Yet in the past 3 years, twelve reactors have been slated for early retirement and another dozen are at risk. Can nuclear plants be operated competitively in today’s market?
 
An evolving energy market, led by cheap natural gas and subsidized renewable generation, threatens the long-term financial viability of America’s remaining nuclear power plants. Since 2013, utility executives have announced the early retirement of twelve reactors and Wall Street estimates reveal another dozen to be at risk; raising the question: Can nuclear plants be operated competitively in today’s market?

Over the past three decades, the U.S. Nuclear Industry achieved unprecedented levels of safety and reliability; providing almost 20 percent of all domestic electricity and generating 63 percent of America’s carbon-free power. Unlike other clean energy sources, nuclear power is available during all weather conditions, offers price stability, and on-site long-term fuel supplies.

Competition from cheap natural gas and subsidized renewable generation combined with rising operations and maintenance costs stemming from a slew of new regulations and aging equipment challenge the long-term financial viability of nuclear power plants. In its recent news release, Exelon cited a combined loss of $800 million in the past seven years – an average of about $57 million per station per year – as the reason for shuttering its Clinton and Quad Cities nuclear plants.

In an effort to improve the financial viability of the remaining nuclear fleet, industry executives launched the Delivering the Nuclear Promise initiative; challenging employees and vendors to identify innovative ways to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and raise revenues while maintaining operational safety and reliability. Responding to this call, StrategyDriven Enterprises identified 29 near-term cost reduction opportunities potentially saving utilities $10+ million per station in annual operations and maintenance costs.

“Our team of seasoned nuclear executives sought out and adapted contemporary business practices for the nuclear environment,” explains Nathan Ives, StrategyDriven’s Chief Executive Officer. “The result is an initial set of organizational, process, and technology changes that preserve operational safety and reliability while at the same time dramatically reduce costs.”

StrategyDriven’s cost reduction initiatives and identification method are captured in Four Overlooked Controllable Costs that could save nuclear plants from early retirement. The document highlights 29 initiatives to reduce costs in the areas of Human Capital Management, Information Technology, Supply Chain / Inventory Management, and Oversight. StrategyDriven experience reveals many of these cost reductions to be implementable within 180 days and to possess similar payback periods.

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz recently indicated that retiring nuclear power plants would make it more difficult for the U.S. to achieve its climate change goals.

“The idea is we are supposed to be adding zero-carbon sources, not subtracting or simply replacing by building to just kind of tread water,” Moniz said at a May symposium the department organized to discuss the industry’s economic prospects. “I think very few understand that nothing else comes close [to nuclear],” he added.
